Highlands Regional Medical Center is located on U.S. 27 South near the southern city limits, Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center is located just off U.S. 27 North between Sebring and Avon Park, and Florida Hospital-Lake Placid. All three hospitals offer a wide range of medical/surgical services including heart cath labs and have 24-hour emergency rooms staffed by highly trained technicians and physicians. All are accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and employ medical staff equipped to handle a full range of patient needs. Patients requiring CT scans, MRIs and a variety of nuclear medicine diagnostic services can receive these services without leaving the community. Opened in 1965, Highlands Regional Medical Center has over 200 physicians of nearly all specialties on staff. Through several additions and renovations, the hospital has positioned itself to provide the latest in medical services and technology in a wide range of healthcare disciplines. This community-owned hospital enjoys a board of directors comprised of community leaders from all walks of life. Health Management Associates, one of the premier hospital management firms in the nation, operates the hospital under a contract with the local board of directors. Highlands Regional Medical Center is also home to ER Extra, a new approach to emergency care that gets patients seen by a healthcare professional in minutes. In addition to four modern hospital operating suites, a specially trained total joint replacement nursing staff serves the needs of patients requiring surgeries on hips, knees, shoulders and hands. In the Women’s Center, specially designed birthing suites and a trained maternity nursing staff provide the latest in birthing experience for new parents. In 2011 Highlands Regional opened a new state-of-the-art Breast Center. In 2012 the hospital brought robotic surgery to to Highlands County and began an interventional cardiology program. Built in 1998, Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center in Sebring offers 159 private rooms nestled on 86-acres in Sun ’n Lake Community. Included on this campus is the county’s only Heart & Vascular Center certified for coronary angioplasties, Certified Stroke Center, Hospitalist team program and pediatric unit paired with the Walt Disney Pavilion for Children.
The Sebring hospital also offers our newly-opened all-suite Blessed Beginnings Birthing Center, the Breast Care Center staffed with on-site board-certified radiologists, the Bone, Joint & Spine Center offering a variety of minimally invasion procedures through board-certified surgeons, pain medicine, wound care featuring hyperbaric services, surgical services, sleep center and a wide array of diagnostic imaging like PET CT, MRI and digital mammograms. Already the county’s busiest ER, an expanded Emergency Care Center with 32 private rooms just opened in November.
Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center in Lake Placid was built in 1981 and features 50 private rooms on US Highway 27. It contains the county’s only senior behavioral health unit, as well as emergency care, surgical services, fitness center and diagnostic imaging all with electronic medical record capabilities.
